Driving west along the I-70 from Silverthorne and Frisco to Vail, one must drive over Vail Pass at 10,666ft elevation. Forming the border between Eagle and Summit Counties, Vail Pass has a parking area at the top providing high elevation access to a handful of trails in the area including Wilder Gulch and the Shrine Mountain Trail at the summit of nearby Shrine Pass (11,094ft elevation).
