On the west side of Horsetooth Reservoir near Fort Collins, CO lies the 7,255ft Horsetooth Rock inside Larimer County's Horsetooth Mountain Open Space. This scenic and popular hiking area has more than 29 miles of hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding trails across over 2,800 acres of land. This is a fee/permit area, and the Horsetooth Mountain Trailhead is open 24 hours a day year-round. This area used to be occupied by the Culver, Herrington, Soderberg and Wathen families, whose names are used for some of the trail names in the area. This area links seamlessly via a pair of trails to the Lory State Park just north, making for a large combined trail system for recreational users to enjoy.
