Colorado

A short 15-mile drive northwest of Fort Collins, CO along the Poudre Canyon Highway is the Gateway Natural Area, owned and managed by the City of Fort Collins. Formerly the location of the city's water filtration plant at the confluence point of the North Fork Poudre River and Main Fork Poudre River, this area is now a destination for hikers, kayakers, fishermen and more. The small hiking area links up with the primitive Wintersteen Trail to the north that travels all the way west through the Roosevelt National Forest to the Grey Rock Recreation Area (USFS), but this trail is difficult to follow and overgrown. This year-round area is a fee area (credit card only).
