A short drive north on US Highway 287 north of Fort Collins, CO past the Poudre Canyon Highway turn-off is the 755-acre Eagles Nest Open Space, named for a prominent geological feature Eagles Nest Rock. About 6 miles of hiking trails traverse this area in a series of loops and access to the North Fork of the Cache La Poudre River attracts fisherman to this small recreational area as well, but no mountain bikers are allowed in this area. There is no entrance fee and Eagles Nest Open Space is open year-round, but the southern part of the Open Space is closed during part of the year (around February through July) to protect the Golden Eagle nesting grounds from which this areas name derives.
